Thank you, Thank You, Thank you!

We want to extend a huge thank you to the PTA and families for all of the wonderful ways you spoiled the Gunston Staff and made us feel so very special and appreciated during Staff Appreciation Week!

Our school's success is due to the incredible people who support our students every day. Many of you have taken the time to send kind notes and treats not only to your child's classroom teachers but also to other staff members in the building, such as our special educators, instructional assistants, front office staff, specialist teachers (Art, Music, PE, and Japanese), and custodial staff.

These acts of kindness make a huge impact on staff as we reflect on the year and wind down. Thank you!

Principals' Message

Dear Families,

As we transition into May, we are thrilled to celebrate the upcoming Staff Appreciation Week, where we'll honor the amazing individuals who dedicate themselves to the growth and success of our students. We're deeply grateful for the generous donations from families to make this week truly special. Your support means the world to us. Please continue to send in contributions so we can ensure our staff feel truly cherished and valued.

Additionally, we're gearing up for our state assessments, a time when our students have the opportunity to showcase their knowledge and skills. To help them perform their best, please ensure they are well-rested and ready to shine on the days of their assessments.

As we approach the end of the school year, our eagles are eagerly anticipating a host of fun end-of-year activities. It's a time to celebrate their achievements, growth, and the wonderful community we've built together.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in making our school such a vibrant and nurturing environment for our students and staff.

Warm regards,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Opie

Family Summit Designed to Enhance Safety, Security, and Inclusion

The FCPS Family Summit will take place on Saturday, April 20, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at Marshall High School. The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families such as raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. Participants may also join online sessions, which will provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Visit the Family Summit webpage to learn about the guest speakers and to register for the event. The theme — Safe, Supported, and Included — aligns with Goal 2 of FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan

Mental Health in Childhood

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are associated with children’s physical and mental health. Mental health disorders such as ADHD and anxiety are the most commonly diagnosed in children, which often occurs together. Anxiety is feelings of worry, apprehension or dread that something bad is going to happen. Children diagnosed with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, or be overly active. Early diagnosis and appropriate services for children and their families can make a difference in the lives of children with mental health disorders.

Anxiety related triggers are lonely and frightening emotional responses related to situations, persons, places or objects. Today’s sources of stress for our students include: increased coursework and graduation requirements, extracurricular activities, household responsibilities, and social media. Social media has been a great way to increase connection and communication, but for our young people it contributes to shorter attention spans and information overload. Signs of anxiety include appearing worried, irritable or nervous, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, along with physical symptoms such as sleeping problems, headaches, and stomach aches. It is understandable for a parent to be worried because figuring out what to do is hard. Here are five simple ways to respond to teens with anxiety:

  1. Recognize warning signs.
  2. Guide your child to take a few deep breaths to slow things down.
  3. Make sure your child understands you are available if they need to talk.
  4. Acknowledge your child’s feelings and avoid downplaying situations or issues.
  5. Help them come up with ways to deal with the situation next time.

Principals' Message

Dear Families,

We are excited for the arrival of spring!   As we reflect on the past month, we are thrilled to celebrate the success of our recent events. Our STEM Night was a roaring success, showcasing the incredible projects of our budding scientists. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the community volunteers and staff who made this event possible. Your dedication to nurturing our students' curiosity is truly inspiring!  Another highlight of the month was our Career Fair, where our eagles had the opportunity to explore various professions firsthand. We extend our sincerest thanks to the members of our community who generously shared their expertise and passion for their careers. Witnessing our students' enthusiasm and inspiration was a testament to the impact of such events on their educational journey.

As we transition into spring break, we encourage all our eagle families to take this time to relax, recharge, and enjoy precious moments together. Whether it's a family getaway or simply spending quality time at home, we hope this break provides the perfect opportunity for rejuvenation and bonding.

Amidst the excitement, we also want to emphasize the importance of familiarizing ourselves with our digital use policy. As technology continues to play a significant role in education, it's crucial that we empower our students with the knowledge and understanding of responsible digital citizenship.  We are including a link to the FCPS Digital Citizenship page for additional resources and suggestions:  https://www.fcps.edu/resources/technology/digital-citizenship-internet-safety/digital-citizenship-families.  We encourage you to remind your students that school laptops are only for school assignments and not personal use.

Additionally, we recently discussed strategies to support our eagles as they prepare for the upcoming standards of learning assessments at the PTA meeting. Our third thru sixth grade students will begin taking SOL assessments the first week of May.  Teachers have been using strategies all year to help your child be successful on these online assessments.  Your involvement and partnership in your child's education are invaluable, and together, we can ensure their success.

As we look ahead to the coming month, we are filled with anticipation for the enriching experiences and learning opportunities that await our eagles. We are excited to celebrate our military children in April, please stay tuned for details.  Let's continue to foster a nurturing environment where every eagle soars to new heights!

Wishing you all a wonderful spring break filled with joy, laughter, and cherished memories.

Warm regards,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Opie

Spring Break      March 25 - March 29 Schools and school offices will be closed.

We wish our students and teachers a happy and restful Spring Break!

April 1 & 2 School Planning Days (no school for students) Updated COVID Recommendations

In accordance with the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) respiratory virus guidance, FCPS and the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) have updated school COVID-19 recommendations.

The COVID-19 isolation period of five days is no longer recommended

New respiratory virus guidance applies to respiratory viral illnesses, including COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Students who have symptoms of, test positive for, or have been diagnosed with a respiratory virus may return to school when the student is fever-free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication; AND the student’s symptoms have improved or resolved.

Students should follow additional precautions as outlined per the CDC upon resumption of normal activities.

Should I Send My Child to School?

Please refer to the chart on this attendance webpage if your child is experiencing symptoms or illnesses, and you are unsure if they should go to school.

Thank you for helping keep our students and staff healthy.

SOL Dates Family Summit Safe, Supported, and Included — the FCPS Family Summit

The conference will cover topics that are helpful for all families, such as social-emotional resources, along with a specially curated online component to provide supports for students with disabilities and their families.

Some of the topics include raising resilient, independent children; forming meaningful connections with children; addressing big emotions; and the dangers of opioids and fentanyl. The conference is being planned by several FCPS offices in collaboration with the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, Black Women’s Educational Alliance - DC Chapter, Hispanic Educators Association, and Asian Educators Association.

This year’s theme is Safe, Supported, and Included, which aligns with Goal 2 of the FCPS Strategic Plan. More details will be available after spring break.

Lexia Night Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend a virtual information night on Tuesday, April 9, to learn more about Lexia and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom to support student growth. Participants will also get tips for supporting their students at home. Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS’ 2023-30 Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

A note from Ms. Rucinski & Mrs. Opie

Dear Families,

We wanted to share that we have been having an increase of students using their school issued laptops for items not related to school.  In order to use these school devices, students agree to only use them for approved materials as directed by the teacher or it can be considered a violation of the Students Rights and Responsibilities.  We have had to address inappropriate usage recently and wanted to remind you of a tool the county purchased, so you can also monitor what sites your child is accessing during the school day or after school.  Please read below about Lightspeed and consider signing up for the weekly parent report.  We appreciate your collaboration in keeping all of our students safe and on track.

A program has been purchased by FCPS for all schools to help parents and staff monitor the websites students are browsing during lessons within the school day when laptops are being used. This internet content filtering services is called Lightspeed.

In the spirit of always wanting to maximize transparency for you, and safety for your children, I want to share with you that any parent or guardian interested in knowing more about their child’s internet browsing activity on an FCPS device can sign up to receive a weekly Parent Report from Lightspeed at no cost. This report will provide a list of the top sites your child visited that week.

Additionally, the weekly Parent Report offers you the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through this portal, you may pause your child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Purple Up - Month of the Military Child

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) is gearing up to honor and celebrate its military-connected youth in April, the Month of the Military Child and on Purple Up! Day!

This year, Virginia will celebrate Purple Up! Day on Wednesday, April 17. Purple Up! Day is a special day for communities to come together and wear purple as a visible gesture of support for our military-connected youth and their families. Purple symbolizes the combined colors of all branches of the military.

FCPS Purple Up! t-shirts are available for purchase now through Friday, March 8, 2024 here. The shirts highlight our gratitude and appreciation for our 14,000 military-connected students and their families. #PurpleUpFCPS!

For more information and/or to connect with FCPS resources, email us at [email protected]

Join a Community Conversation on Fentanyl and Other Drugs

A community conversation addressing the opioid crisis within Northern Virginia and Fairfax County Public Schools will be held Wednesday, March 18, 6:30-8 p.m., in the auditorium at Lake Braddock Secondary School. Please enter through Door #14.

All attendees will receive a free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

This discussion will provide families, staff, and students with valuable knowledge about the dangers of drugs and deadly fentanyl. The material discussed is suitable for students in grades 6-12. Together as a community, we aim to explore collaborative strategies to minimize the impact of these harmful and too-often fatal substances.

Language interpretation services are available as well as American Sign Language accommodation. Childcare and transportation will also be provided, as needed. Learn more about the event and register online.

Do You Know Where FCPS Funding Comes From?

The majority of FCPS funding is requested from the Fairfax County government, which generates its revenue from real estate and personal property taxes. The Commonwealth of Virginia provides the next largest source of revenue to FCPS through state aid and sales tax. The rest of the funding comes from a variety of sources, including federal aid and tuition for non-county residents. (The numbers above represent the FY 2025 proposed school operating fund in millions.)

FCPS does not have the authority to impose taxes and may only charge fees where the Commonwealth of Virginia has granted specific authority. Learn more about FCPS’ FY 2025 Advertised Budget.

Principals' Message

Dear Families,

We hope this newsletter finds you well and filled with the warmth of the season. As we reflect on the values that make our community special, kindness shines as a guiding principle in all that we do. In this edition, we celebrate kindness and encourage goal-setting as we review progress reports.

Kindness is the cornerstone of our school community, and it’s a value we cherish dearly. Whether it’s a simple act of compassion or a grand gesture of generosity, every act of kindness contributes to the positive atmosphere that makes Gunston a nurturing environment for our students. As parents and staff, let’s continue to model and reinforce kindness in our interactions with one another and with our children. Encourage your child to share stories of kindness they witness or participate in, fostering a culture of empathy and support.

As we recently received second quarter progress reports, it’s a perfect time for students to reflect on their academic progress and set goals for the future. Reviewing progress reports provides an excellent opportunity for meaningful discussions about strengths, areas for improvement, and the steps needed to achieve personal and academic growth.  By setting goals, students develop essential skills such as self-awareness, perseverance, and resilience, laying the foundation for success both inside and outside the classroom.  Please reach out to your teacher if you would like to have a conference.   Conferences offer a valuable opportunity for collaborative dialogue between teachers and families. During these meetings, we encourage parents to share insights into their child’s goals, challenges, and achievements. Together, we can work as partners in supporting every student on their journey to excellence.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership in nurturing a culture of kindness and academic excellence at Gunston. Together, we can empower our children to reach their full potential and make a positive difference in the world.

Warm regards,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Opie

This Week is National School Counseling Week! Thank You To Our Incredible Counselors, Ms. Ephraim & Ms. Amin

Our school counselors, Ms. Ephraim & Ms. Amin, work with students in various capacities, whether through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling.

Counselors help students build confidence, encourage strong study skills, and provide educational support to transition successfully to the next grade.  Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.

Please encourage your child(ren) to make them a card, write a thank you note, or just take a moment to let our school counselors know how much you appreciate them!
