Kristen Rucinski - Principal       Ebony Opie - Asst. Principal Gunston Gazette Principals' Message

Dear Gunston Families,

As we embrace the cooler days of November, I’d like to take a moment to reflect on the fantastic start we’ve had to this school year. We have officially completed our first quarter, and progress reports are a valuable opportunity for us all to reflect on each child’s achievements, set new goals, and continue our journey of growth together. I encourage you to take time with your child to review their progress report and celebrate the efforts they have made so far. Recognize their strengths, and help them see areas where they can continue to grow. It’s a great way to emphasize that learning is a journey, and every step forward is a celebration.

November is also a month for giving thanks and showing appreciation. At Gunston Elementary, we are focusing on ways to show gratitude, both big and small. We are talking to students about expressing thanks to their classmates, teachers, and even family members. Whether it’s a kind note, a simple “thank you,” or helping someone in need, these acts of kindness go a long way in building a strong, supportive community.

You can continue this focus at home by talking with your children about kindness. Ask them about ways they can show appreciation each day, and encourage them to look for opportunities to help others. Kindness is a habit that grows when it’s practiced regularly, and it’s one of the most powerful tools we have in creating a positive culture both at school and at home.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Together, we are helping our children soar to new heights, embracing the journey every step of the way.

Wishing you a wonderful month filled with gratitude, kindness, and connection.

With gratitude,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Opie

Services for Hearing-Impaired and Visually-Impaired Students

Students with sensory disabilities require specialized services and support to access instruction that is typically presented visually and auditorily (by means of hearing). FCPS provides educational services to students who are deaf, hearing-impaired, or visually impaired. They are supported in various settings, including at their school or through itinerant specialists who travel to different schools to work with students, rather than being based in a single school. Gunston Gazette Principals' Message

Dear Gunston Family,

We are more than halfway through the first quarter, and time is certainly flying by! On Wednesday, interims were sent home. It is important to take some time to review these reports with your child, celebrate their accomplishments, and identify areas for growth. Your encouragement and feedback can make a huge difference. Please be sure to sign and return the interims to your child's teacher by Monday.

At Gunston, we remain focused on our expectations that all of our Eagles are consistently safe, respectful, and responsible in every area of the school day, including on the bus. Following these expectations is key for earning a 4 in Citizenship Skills. Please take a moment to talk with your child about how they can show kindness to their peers and contribute positively to our school community.

Additionally, teachers will be reaching out soon to schedule first-quarter parent conferences. Please keep an eye on Talking Points and your emails for communication regarding these meetings. We greatly value our parent partnerships and know that by working together, we can support the success and well-being of all students.

A special thank you goes out to our wonderful PTA for their hard work in organizing a successful 5K this past Sunday! It was amazing to see our community come together to support each other and raise funds for an after-school program.  We appreciate everyone who participated.

Finally, as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we are reminded of the importance of diversity and how it enriches our school culture. Let’s continue to embrace the many unique backgrounds and traditions within our Gunston family.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Warm regards,

Ms. Rucinski and Mrs. Opie

Message from Fairfax County Police Department

I’m sure if you’ve waited in the Kiss and Ride line, especially toward the end, you may have been witness to some reckless driving when, at times, people decide to pass over the double yellow line. The Fairfax County Police have received these complaints and continue to collaborate with our staff on the best way to safely queue for and rotate through the Kiss and Ride area. An officer observed our process on Wednesday afternoon with administration and asked we share a few important reminders.

Through recent observations, the police would like to remind everyone that motorists stopping on Gunston Road in such a manner as to impede the use of the roadway are doing so in violation of state code and are subject to citation. Minutes Matter! Officers have said that parents blocking Gunston Road prior to drop off time of 8:25 AM or pick up time of 3:20 PM could be cited. After those times, during the normal pick-up times, a simple, brief, back-up in traffic is not a violation. Please be aware of the time you arrive and it is not too early so we don’t impede traffic on Gunston Road.

Thank you for your continued attention to this matter and please remember to inch-up closely to the car in front of you.  A couple extra feet in front of your car, multiplied by everyone in line, adds up fast.  Please refrain from being on your cell phone while in the Kiss and Ride lane as it is a safety concern and delays traffic.  If you are picking up or dropping of  your child to the main office and/or SACC, you MUST park your car and not park near the sidewalk.  It is illegal to park next to the sidewalk with yellow lines and signs indicating no standing or waiting.  The police will be spot checking the surrounding areas for continued compliance so please follow these reminders and, as always, buckle up everyone in the car and use car seats when necessary!

Scheduling Family Trips or Events

Good attendance is an important life skill that will help students succeed in school and beyond.

When planning trips or family events, refer to the FCPS calendar and try to use weekends and school holidays. Every day of learning is a day toward success. Keep in mind that absences add up quickly. Students absent 10% of the school year (or just two days per month) are considered chronically absent.

When possible, schedule appointments for your child outside of school hours. If your child needs to miss school because of an illness or another reason, you must report the absence.

Watch this video with tips on understanding our school calendar and visit our Attendance webpage for additional information. Attend today, achieve tomorrow!

Emergency Care Forms to be sent home next week for review

Be on the look-out  for a copy of your student's Emergency Care Form in their Thursday folder next week.  Please take a moment to ensure that the school has the most recent information.

Changes/additions may be made directly on the form and returned to your student's teacher. Thank you!

Social Studies Basal Resources Review

FCPS is adopting Social Studies Basal Resources for the 2025-26 school year. Basal resources are the primary resources used to support instruction in a given subject. Public review of the instructional materials under consideration — which is part of the process for selecting new resources — is underway. Visit the Community Review webpage for more information on how to view the materials online or in person.

All community feedback will be shared with School Board members before they vote to select materials in spring 2025. FCPS adopts basal resources by the process outlined in Regulation 3004.

When a Student Should Stay Home From School

Whether students miss school because of illness or any other reason, missing school leads to learning loss.

Help your child succeed by encouraging them to attend as many days as possible, but do make sure your child stays home if they are sick. Visit FCPS’ website for information on when to keep your child at home.

If your child has a chronic illness, make sure to notify their teacher so that support can be provided if needed. Also, keep an open line of communication with your school's public health staff.

  Blue Star Welcome Week

Every year, approximately 600,000 military-connected families relocate. Most of these families move to new duty stations, while some transition out of the military and others transition in. Most of these moves take place over the summer, and Fairfax County Public Schools is committed to ensuring our military families feel welcomed and a sense of belonging to their local community.

Blue Star Welcome Week is an opportunity for our community to welcome our military-connected families and show them our appreciation for their service and sacrifices. Throughout the week, FCPS will help ease their transition through events, messages, actions of welcome, and opportunities to make meaningful connections

We look forward to connecting with our military connected students and families this week!

2024 Student Rights and Responsibilities

FCPS’ Student Rights and Responsibilities document (SR&R) explains expectations for student behavior and adult responses to enhance school safety and to create a fair, equitable, and supportive school environment. Read Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid’s letter to families regarding the SR&R

Parents/caregivers should talk to their child(ren) about expectations for this school year. Also, please log in to SIS ParentVUE and sign to acknowledge your review of the SR&R, or sign and return the signature sheet to your child’s school by Monday, September 30

You can submit questions online regarding the SR&R.

Safety Drills During the School Year

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for FCPS. Each school has an emergency preparedness plan to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Schools are required by state law to practice emergency drills, including lockdown drills, each year. Schools are also required to notify parents and guardians at least 24 hours before a school conducts a lockdown drill. However, schools are not required to give the specific date and time of the drill in advance.

The first lockdown drill of the school year must take place within the first 20 days of school. Preschool and kindergarten students are exempt from practicing the first lockdown drill.

Your child may come home and talk about their experience during the drill. We encourage you to talk with your child about the importance of being prepared for emergencies. Please review these frequently asked questions to support your students before and after school lockdown drills.

️ Know Our Security Terms

FCPS uses specific terminology to describe the actions school staff and students should take to ensure safety in a variety of situations. It is important for staff, families, and students to understand what the different terms mean and how they impact school operations.

Watch this video to learn about safety terms including lockdown; secure the building; and stay put, stay tuned.

If students, staff, or community members have a safety concern at school (that is not an immediate emergency), they should submit a tip to the FCPS Safety Tipline. In an emergency, please call 9-1-1.

New Feature in ParentVUE: Report Full-Day Absences

Starting on the first day of school, Monday, August 19, parents/caregivers can submit full-day absences through FCPS’ SIS ParentVUE platform. This will make reporting and tracking absences easier for our school.

Parents/caregivers may report absences by using ParentVUE or by contacting the front office. Please find important details below:

  • How to Use ParentVUE: Log in to your ParentVUE account and select “Report Absence.”
Student Consent Forms

Student consent forms currently available on ParentVue will be moved to the Parent Digital Consent System (PDC). Families can log into the PDC using their ParentVue credentials to complete consent forms assigned to their child.  If you have a new ParentVue account, you must wait 24 hours after it is created to use the PDC.

Free and Reduced-Price Meals

According to the Centers for Disease Control, eating breakfast at school is associated with better attendance rates, fewer missed school days, and better test scores. Students who qualify for free and reduced-price meals receive breakfast and lunch at school at no cost.

Families who qualified for FRM from SY 23-24, will continue to qualify for the first 30 days of school. A new application must be submitted by October 1 for SY 24-25 consideration.

Apply on the Free and Reduced-Price Meals webpage.

Immunizations and Records

Are Your Child’s Immunizations and Records Up to Date?

In Virginia, it's required by law for students to have certain immunizations to attend school. This is supported by guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Virginia Department of Health, and FCPS Regulation 2101.

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing ParentVUE

Families of students with incomplete immunization records need to provide acceptable proof of immunization to their child's school as soon as possible. You can find the list of required immunizations on the General Registration Immunizations webpage.

If your child’s immunizations are incomplete, here's what you need to do:

  1. Get your child’s immunization record from one of these places:
  • Request immunization records for free through the Virginia Immunization Information System (VIIS).
  • If your child was immunized outside Virginia, get records from those states’ systems.
  • Request records from your healthcare provider. Some may charge for copies.
  • Submit your child’s immunization record to your child’s school.

Families should submit their child’s completed immunization records before September 30.

Please visit FCPS’ website for more information. If you would like to speak with an FCPS staff member, please leave a message at one of the phone numbers below. Thank you for supporting our students' health and well-being.

The 2023-30 Strategic Plan — Goal 1: Strong Start, Pre-K-12

The 2023-30 strategic plan sets five main goals to create positive change in FCPS. These goals show where we should focus our attention and will help us align our efforts.

Each goal has an equity commitment — the promise we make to every student to support them in attaining these goals. Each goal also has several measures that allow us to track our progress.

The first goal in the strategic plan focuses on each and every student having a strong start in FCPS. Whether they're joining us in preschool or in high school, we want our students to be set up for success.See how Goal 1 is being put into practice

Make Every Day Count! The Importance of Attendance

As you plan upcoming trips and other family events, please remember the importance of sending your child to school every day. Review the FCPS School Year Calendar and try to plan any time away during breaks from school.

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent (missing 18 days or more) in kindergarten and first grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of third grade.

Learn how families can help form good attendance habits.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

The beginning of the school year is the best time to develop strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.

Are Your Child’s Immunizations and Records Up to Date?

Starting Monday, September 30, students who have not provided proof of immunization will not be allowed to attend school.

You can check your child’s immunization compliance by accessing ParentVUE

Gunston Gazette

Dear Gunston Family,

We had an amazing first day at Gunston today!  The smiles and laughter filled our hallways and classrooms.  We are looking forward to tomorrow as we continue to set expectations and routines for our students.  We ask that tomorrow students will take their usual transportation to and from school.  For the safety and security of our entire community, staff will help any student who needs assistance getting to class.  Please read the important reminders and updates below to ensure you are following our procedures.

Important Reminders: Same Day Dismissal Changes

Same day dismissal changes, including planned early pick-ups of students, must be communicated to the front office prior to 2:30 pm.

  • A note to the classroom teacher is also appreciated BUT, as classroom teachers may not have an opportunity to check their email before the end of the day, all dismissal changes MUST be communicated to the front office.
  • If your child is being picked up during their Specials time (music, PE, art, etc.), please allow additional time for them to return to their classroom to pack up their belongings.
  • If your child attends SACC, be sure to also let the SACC staff know of a dismissal change as SACC operates separately from FCPS.
Transportation, Arrival, and Dismissal
  • Bus Routes are posted to SIS ParentVUE accounts.  Please note that your child can not change their bus without a pass from the office.  If there is a need for your child to ride a different bus, please contact the front office in the morning.
  • Kiss and Ride  starts at 8:25 am for arrival. Please follow the line and pull up to Door 3. Please do not arrive early as we want to avoid blocking traffic on Gunston Road since it is one lane in each direction.  If you arrive at school after 8:35, please park and bring your child to the Main Office to check-in. Pick-up for Kiss and Ride will begin at 3:20 pm, and please place your tag on your dashboard. Please have your child/children enter/exit your vehicle on the passenger side. Remember to stay in your car for Kiss and Ride. A staff member will open your car for your child to exit or enter your car. PLEASE DO NOT RELEASE YOUR CHILD FROM THE CAR PRIOR TO THE DESIGNATED SPOT WHERE STAFF CAN SAFELY HELP THEM UNLOAD.  Families and students walking to the front door must use the crosswalk for safety procedures and enter through Door 1 only.  No students or families should be crossing the parking lot.  We appreciate your assistance in following these procedures to ensure everyone safely arrives and dismisses from school.  Students may not be dropped off before 8:25 a.m., when our doors open. There is NO supervision prior to that time.
Transportation Patience and Safety

Thank you for your patience as we all get used to new routines this school year. We appreciate our families being patient as they wait for their children’s buses.

If a student’s bus is delayed, parents may access the Bus Delay Notification System or use the Here Comes the Bus mobile app to receive the delayed bus report. Email messages will be sent to announce significant bus delays. Contact the Transportation Office at 703-446-2150 with any additional questions. For any concerns after hours (after 5:30 p.m.), contact Safety and Security at 571-423-2000.

To make sure you receive email messages about bus delays, update your contact information in SIS ParentVUE.

Visiting Gunston (driver’s license is needed)

The safety and security of our students and our staff are of utmost importance. Every visitor who enters the building is monitored. All visitors entering Gunston will need to have a valid driver’s license and sign-in using the Visitor Management System (VMS). The VMS will issue each visitor a sticker that should always be worn when in the building.

  Lunch with your Child(ren)

To ensure school staff have time to teach and reinforce cafeteria routines and procedures, we will be delaying the visitation of family members during lunch until September 9th.  We have a designated table for families and their student to sit together as the classroom tables need to be available for our students.  You must sign into the office with your driver’s license and wear a visitor pass in order to be with your child in the cafeteria.

Gunston Gazette Principals' Message

Dear Gunston Elementary Families,

As we prepare for the final weeks leading up to the start of a new school year, we are filled with excitement and anticipation. We are thrilled to welcome back our returning Eagles and extend a warm greeting to our new Eagles who are joining the Gunston family this year.

Our theme for this year is "Embrace the Journey: Growing Together, Learning Together, Soaring Together." This theme reflects our commitment to fostering a supportive and collaborative community where every student can thrive. We are dedicated to nurturing a safe, respectful, and responsible environment where all students are encouraged to reach their fullest potential.

To help you prepare for the upcoming school year, we have included a link to our Parent Handbook for you to review.  As we receive additional guidance it will be updated.  We will send home a hard copy in the first Thursday Folder of the year. This handbook contains important information about our school policies, procedures, and expectations. We encourage you to take the time to read through it carefully.

We are excited to invite you to our Open House on August 16th from 9:00-10:00.  In order to assist with parking and large crowds, we ask that families whose last names begin with A-L attend from 9:00-9:30 and last names M-Z attend from 9:30-10:00.  This will be a wonderful opportunity for you and your child to drop off school supplies, meet your teacher, and get acquainted with the classroom. Our teachers will be reaching out to you by Wednesday, August 14th, to introduce themselves and provide any additional information you may need.

At Gunston Elementary, we believe in the power of a caring community. Our dedicated teachers and staff are committed to creating a nurturing and inclusive environment where every student feels valued and supported. We are honored to serve such a wonderful school community, and we look forward to partnering with you to ensure a successful and enriching school year.

We are enthusiastic about the year ahead and the many opportunities it holds for growth, learning, and achievement. Together, as partners in your child's educational journey, we will make this year memorable and successful.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to Gunston Elementary. We are excited to embark on this journey together and look forward to seeing you all soon!

Immunizations

First Day of School

Gunston Staff will be available to help students find their classroom on the first day of school, Monday, August 19. Doors to school will open at 8:25 a.m. and school officially begins at 8:35 a.m.

The PTA will be hosting a Tears & Cheers breakfast after the bell rings on the first day of school.  Visit the cafeteria and connect with other Gunston parents!

If you are planning to walk your student to class the first day of school, please ensure they come to school the same way they will go home that day.  If your child rides the bus, after you put them on the bus you can meet them at the school.  We recognize the excitement of the first day of school and are excited to welcome you the opportunity to escort your child to class this first day.  Our staff is excited to begin the first day with their students and will not be available for individual conferences at that moment.  Please go to the office if you have any specific questions we may be able to assist you with answering.

Please note that for the safety and security of our students, our parents must say good-bye to their eagles at the door after the first day.  We have all additional staff in the hallways and patrols assisting our students as they find their classrooms.

Bus Routes will be posted to SIS ParentVUE accounts the week of August 12.

Kiss and Ride  starts at 8:25 am for arrival.
