Gunston has enjoyed a week of activities to celebrate Literacy, Reading and Culture.

We started off with a daily schedule of themed spirit wear that included "Celebrate Diversity" wearing identity outfits, college jerseys for "Dress for Success", "Buddy up - You are Never Alone with a Book" twin day, and "Snuggle Up with a Good Book" pajamas.  During the day on twin day, classes were paired up to participate in some reading activities. Other fun daytime activities included our Dance Extravaganza and Drop Everything and Read with a snack.

Monday Night was a blend of two of Gunston's traditionally favorite evening events - Heritage Night and Literacy Night.  Families and staff made and shared food that represented their culture or experiences.  There were activities that included reading, games and crafts.  Students enjoyed getting henna - fancy lacy sienna painting on their hands. Games were played around a fireplace (projected version.)  Teachers read stories in their classrooms. In the gym we were entertained with giant Chinese Dragons and skilled Japanese drummers and more. Gunston was packed and everyone had a great time thanks to our awesome community.  Thanks also goes to the students from Hayfield who volunteered their time to perform, help set up, and clean up.

Many Families Dressed in Cultural Clothes

For three nights after our huge event on Monday, teachers read stories to students on Zoom.  At least 80 families each evening tuned in for the enjoyable readings.

Every morning on the news, Mrs Gminski, our reading specialist, gave out reading prizes to 3 lucky students in each grade level.  Lucky winners were super excited to pick out special readable prizes in the library.
