It was a beautiful day for field day. The morning was filled with excitement and games with the 4-6 grades filling the fields. The afternoon (and most of our photos) were the younger classes. Relay races, water games, and even chalk drawing and bucket stacking grabbed everyone's attention. 6th graders volunteered and made extra fun for students who participated.

Ms. Benton’s first graders gathered around in a brightly lit classroom, their eyes sparkling with curiosity and excitement. On the tables in front of them lay a fleet of small, colorful robots known as Bee Bots. Through hands-on experimentation and creative problem-solving, the kids not only learned the basics of coding but also developed essential skills such as critical thinking, perseverance, and collaboration.

Gunston celebrated the Military-Connected-Child with breakfast. A delicious feast with families was the start to a short celebration this morning. Students wore purple and shared experiences and feelings about being a youth in an military family. Students were well versed in the benefits and costs of their positions and happy to talk about them. It was heartwarming to see them bear their responsibilities gracefully.

At 2:45 pm on April 8, 2024 many classes at Gunston put on their special viewing glasses, some modified for even better coverage (see paper plates) and braved the outdoors for a spectacular once in 20 years view of the eclipse. Respectful quiet viewing occurred from the blacktop to grassy areas. Every student was briefed in the viewing protocol - wear the glasses! - and all did. Students made notes of the surrounding animal life sounds at intervals of sun coverage. Many had things to say afterwards.

Pi Day at Gunston is always fun. Students compete with their explanations of Pi for a chance to toss a pie into the face of their teacher. Students in the upper levels see who can memorize the most digits of Pi for their chance to toss pies too. One student memorized up to 70+ digits of Pi - amazing!

Some families were able to join their students for a Thanksgiving lunch at Gunston a week before the holiday.

Friday, November 10, 2023 students and staff at Gunston were excited to welcome veterans to the school. A ceremony and breakfast honoring them is part of a proud annual tradition at Gunston.

Red Ribbon Week and “Dare to Care” - Gunston celebrated living bully-free and drug-free this week. Along with these events and building on the kindness theme, Staff and students collected canned goods for the Annual Gunston Harvest Walk to support the local food kitchen, Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC).

Gunston students attended the National Symphony Orchestra's Young People's Concert for all 4th graders in FCPS mid October.

Gunston did it again. Today visitors from all over came to see our AVID in action. From student volunteers to class demonstrations everyone eagerly shared their experiences with AVID - highlighting the authentic benefits it provides.

Blue Star Welcome week gave Gunston Elementary an opportunity to welcome our families who currently serve in the Armed Forces. Check out some photos from events throughout the week

Gunston knows how to have fun on the last day. Students earn the right to pour ice water on their favorite teachers outside. It was COLD.
