Gunston is so proud to conduct our Annual Harvest Walk where we celebrated collecting over 1300 pounds of food to donate to the Lorton Community Action Center (LCAC).

Today the halls of Gunston Elementary were filled with characters from storybooks. Not because it was Halloween, but because the students and staff were celebrating Red Ribbon/Anti-bullying Week and wanted to remind you to show good "character" by saying NO to bullying and drugs.

Critically reviewing literary choices, students are "dressed in their best." Best-dressed is the theme this Thursday for reminder to reflect during Digital Citizenship Week. Students are reflecting on making good (even their best) and critical decisions when choosing digital media. This same lesson is one they can practice when checking over the books at the Gunston Library Scholastic Book Fair happening at the same time.

Digital Citizenship Week October 21-25, 2019!
The theme is Media Balance and Well-Being: Developing a Healthy Relationship with Your Technology.
Gunston is celebrating Digital Citizenship Week with spirit days and activities focused on developing healthy habits around technology use. Students will have a choice board to select at least one activity a day that matches the daily theme.

AVID, or Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program that supports students' academic achievement as they work toward a college education.
Dr Brabrand recently visited Gunston ES, the first AVID elementary school in FCPS, to learn all about how it was being implemented here.

Teachers and staff eagerly cheered for students and families coming to Gunston on the first day of school. Everyone is so excited to meet up with old friends and put new school supplies in desks and get started with luxury of learning.

Congratulations to School Counselor Kemba Ephraim, Fourth Grade Teacher Karen Booth, and Office Assistant Lynn Warner who were recognized at the 2019 FCPS Honors Ceremony!

The weather cleared up just in time for Gunston ES to have the most perfect field day. A slight breeze cooled the soccer kickers and badminton batters. Students frolicked in moon bounces galore while others ran fun water-filled relays. A few rounds of ping pong and pin the mustache on the face made for many laughs. 6th graders ran the events with the maturity beyond their years, helping, consoling and re-directing like champs. Hula Hoops and basketball - endless activity ruled the field. It was a glorious day.

Gunston celebrated sixth grade promotion today. Students thanked parents and teachers. They sang the school song and 6th grade song beautifully. Awards were presented for music, art and various important qualities demonstrated. Tears were shed and cheers were heard. We send them off with pride and the reminder that "Once and Eagle always an Eagle."

Hands on learning is what this class has been all about. Students have made waves, light beams and rolled balls around to learn everything they can about science. More than just learning content, these fifth graders have developed skills to learn - working in teams, discussing their findings, sharing their results. Their awesome achievement has worked to build even higher interest in the topics.

Gunston celebrates the First One Hundred Days in style each year. This year’s one hundredth day was one of the finest ever. From parading around the school in “hundreds wear” to “aging booth pictures” students learned what 100 looks like in multiple ways.

Fourth grade students at Gunston have just been slammed with an M&M tax. It will cost them varying amounts of M&M’s to draw, sit or use the computer. One student opted, today, stand and color for recess to avoid the hefty chair tax. And computer time will cost as high as 4 of those colorful candies. Such hardships!

When the teacher handed out assignments (AKA Official Documents) earlier today- BAM, 2 more M&M's please! Students were annoyed to learn it would cost them sweetly to pay those darned taxes and to get their work done.

As the days go by there will be more items and activities taxed. Parliament has been rumored to be tax exempt with some saying that they may even keep those delicious little taxes for themselves.
